Wallpaper Nostalgia

I discovered Christopher Patrick Ernst's work through Frankie. I really love these photographs for a very particular reason: I happen to have wallpaper like this in my bedroom. Actually, the exact same one as in the third picture. When we moved houses three years ago, the only thing I really wanted for my bedroom was that wallpaper. Eventually I found out they sold it at a wallpaper store in my neighbourhood. The owners of Priem are two sisters in their eighties (at least, I think so?) with a stock of wallpaper that probably dates back to when they were born. Amongst the piles and piles of outdated and not so outdated rolls of wallpaper, I found my dream wallpaper!

In his own words, photographic wallpaper is the intersection of the place we live in and the place we wished we lived in. Cliché but spot on, really. These dreamy images, enchanted forests or faraway islands, are usually set in the most banal of surroundings. This definitely is a good kind of nostalgia. It's sort of ironical to talk about indian summers right now but I came across this article from 2011 a while ago and I could not not share it with you. Aside from the aggravating title (I can't help but roll my eyes when people add le before any random noun as if it makes the word très chic, major pet peeve), it did stick in my head for days.

First off, Jérome Dreyfuss, designer of my dream handbag, and Isabel Marant, designer of just about my dream anything, are apparently married! Obviously they are a match made by the gods from above. Secondly, they have the most adorable kid together named Tal! Awesome people tend to have awesome children as a rule. What does that make my Mom? 

But the most wonderful thing that resulted from their very fortunate union is perhaps this little summer house they share somewhere in the countryside near Paris. I could muse on about the wonders of the simple life but basically what it comes down to is this: if you could think of any place where you'd love to spend your summer, a place like this probably comes to mind. I am lucky enough to have a place like this of my own right outside of Ghent city. I wrote about it a long time ago here.  In these pictures, you can see Griet and Luc's garden, two of my favourite people in the world, but ours is next to theirs and the atmosphere is very similar. Only a couple of years ago, I was always very relucant to join my parents there for some improv barbeque but now I can't wait for it to be summer and spend my evenings round the fire under the stars. - x

More than a photo, less than a video

I stumbled onto these beautiful cinemagraphs last week. Photographer Jamie Beck and visual artist Kevin Hung introduced this wonderful new form of photography in the beginning of 2011. They manage to capture stolen moments in the most nostalgic way. There is no doubt that every of these beautiful little cinemagraphs were conceived after an endless amount of preparation but that certainly doesn't lessen the magic of it all. Really, I could look at these for quite a while. Jamie Beck has a brilliant blog, From Me To You, where she features all of her cinemagraphs, photographs and travels. I myself am especially fond of her tales about her hometown Savannah. Please, someone, anyone, take me there on a roadtrip soon! - x

Maryna Kochetyga

I don't know much about photography and the Flickr community but when pictures like these pop up on my Tumblr Dashboard, I know it's time to delve into it a tad bit. Maryna Kochetyga is, in my opinion, a very talented Ukranian photographer. I love how she combines soft colours with strong emotions and expressions. That is such a cliché thing to say but it beats my usual 'look, so very pretty'.

Daydream nation

I just wanted to show you some pictures of the Tim Walker exhibition I visited last week. Excuse me for the horrible pictures, I'm a terrible photographer. Those of you who live in Belgium, or even in the Benelux, should definitely make a day trip out of it. You still have the chance to do so until June 13. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't love Tim Walker. But what's not to love? Looking at his photographs is escapism of the highest degree. I'm not so big on the big words, those that reach your heart and make your mind wander off to faraway places. But that being said, I can only tell you that I'm apart of Walker's daydream nation. How often have I browsed through Pictures, sitting in a corner at the book store, utterly enchanted, but ending up not buying it for my wallet won't allow it and my arms cannot carry it home. I love the man and his work.

Tim Walker is a dreamer and a collector. This was shown through all his day- and notebooks. It was so fascinating to see all the preparatory work that comes with one single photograph. Another fun thing were the props that he brought in. The ginormous camera and glove as pictured above, but also a spitfire from the Lily Donaldson shoot and toy soldiers and so on.

On a personal note, my city's soccer (or football, you choose) team just won the Belgian Cup which is a pretty fricking great deal. I have a lot of friends that are losing their minds (or getting wasted) at this very moment in Brussels. We watched the game on a big screen in Ghent but now we're home again. Nothing better than a little Ghent pride! Congratulations :))
